    John Kerouac. The Town and the City. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1950]. First edition of the author's first book, signed by the author (as Jack Kerouac) on the front free endpaper. Octavo. [vi], 499, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's red cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, in original dust jacket. Jacket spine toned and worn, with chipping and tears, jacket panels edgeworn with similar chips and short tears, rear jacket panel toned and dampstained, some dampstaining to jacket spine, cloth spine toned and worn, some edgewear and soiling to boards, rear free endpaper torn out (with a small portion remaining), front endleaves thumbsoiled, some damage to page 3, where a small portion of it had been stuck to the facing page. On page 304, there is a blue ball-point ink mark. Beneath Kerouac's signature is the ownership signature of Charles Dudevoir, an acquaintance of Kerouac's when he lived in Lowell, MA. Good.
