    A Handsome Copy of the Final Octavo Edition
    of Audubon's
    Birds and Quadrupeds

    John James Audubon. The Birds of America, From the Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories . New York: Geo. R. Lockwood, [n.d., ca. 1870-1871]. [Together With]: John James Audubon and John Bachman . The Quadrupeds of North America. New York: George R. Lockwood, [n.d., ca. 1870-1871] . First Lockwood edition (without the biography of Audubon in Volume I of Birds), and the final octavo edition of these works printed from the original stones. Eight octavo volumes of Birds and three octavo volumes of Quadrupeds for a total of eleven volumes. Complete with a total of 655 color lithographs (500 for Birds and 155 for Quadrupeds) engraved by W. E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly, after drawings by Audubon. Half-titles present. Uniformly bound in publisher's deluxe full brown morocco, boards decoratively ruled and paneled in dark brown, spines tooled in dark brown and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Some wear to bindings, spines a bit sunned, previous owner's signature on first blank (with ink offsetting or bleeding onto other leaves). Text and plates generally clean and bright. Still, a handsome, near fine set. This handsome octavo reprint of Audubon was printed using the original lithographic stones of the original octavo edition (the stones were lost in a warehouse fire sometime in the 1870's).
