John James Audubon. The Birds of America. From Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories. New York George R. Lockwood, [1870-1871]. Seventh, and final, octavo edition. [Together with:] John James Audubon and John Bachman. The Quadrupeds of North America. New York: George R. Lockwood, [1870]. Fourth octavo edition. Together, two works in eleven volumes, with The Bird of America published in eight volumes rather than the seven of previous editions, Quadrupeds in three. Octavo (10.25 x 6.75 inches; 260 x 170 mm.). Various paginations; 655 tinted lithographic plates after J. J. and J. W. Audubon (500 Birds and 155 Quadrupeds), printed by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley and J. T. Bowen; tissue-guards. Uniformly bound in publisher's brown morocco, spines in six compartments lettered in gilt or with a single gilt-stamped fleuron and ruled in blind; boards elaborately stamped in blind; board edges and turn-ins tooled in blind; all edges gilt; light pinkish-orange coated endpapers; ribbon markers. Backstrips faintly dulled with a few insignificant scuffs; spine ends and joint edges very lightly worn, board edges rubbed, particularly at the corners; trace trivial soiling to the boards. Endpapers faintly discolored around the edges due to binder's glue. Quadrupeds text somewhat browned with some spotting throughout; Birds quite clear with only occasional tiny marginal blemishes and faint offsetting to tissue-guards; some ribbon ties torn and frayed. Near fine. The final octavo edition from the original stones, which were destroyed in a Philadelphia warehouse fire shortly after.
