    John James Audubon. The Birds of America, from Drawings made in the United States and their Territories. By John James Audubon. New York: J. J. Audubon and Philadelphia: J. B. Chevalier, 1840-1844. First octavo edition. Seven volumes. Complete with 500 hand-colored lithographic plates after Audubon, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia (Plates 1-135 and 151-500) and George Endicott of New York (Plates 136-150) with tissue guards. Publisher's original full brown morocco, elaborately ruled and decorated in gilt, spines with five raised bands creating six compartments, four ruled and stamped in blind, two lettered in gilt; minor wear, a few scuffs, corners only just bumped. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, engraved bookplates to front pastedowns, blue cloth ribbon markers. Internally generally clean; minor foxing throughout, minor offsetting from plates, hand-colored plates bright and clean in an excellent state of preservation. A remarkable set in near fine condition, the best we have seen.
