Copper Plate for Plate CCCCXV, No. 83, Brown Creeper, Certhia Familiaris, and Californian Nuthatch, Sitta Pygmea. Engraved by Havell after Audubon's original artwork. Approximately 20 x 12.5 inches. Plate with a silverish-gray sheen with brown areas. Some oxidation, spotting. Mounted by later corner-pieces, matted and framed (no glass). A fine example of this unique item. [Together With:] John James Audubon. Brown Creeper, Certhia Familiaris, and Californian Nuthatch, Sitta Pygmea. London: Robt. Havell, 1838. Original Print for Plate CCCCXV, No. 83. Folio (approximately 23.25 x 16.5 inches). Mounted onto cardboard. Faintly toned with some mild soiling. Trimmed down from original size to more closely mirror the copper plate dimensions. Matted, framed and glazed. Very good.

The Birds of America was published in London between 1827 and 1838, being the work of several engravers and printers. After publication was complete, the plates were sent to the United States, where many of them were sold for scrap or melted down. According to Waldemar H. Fries's The Double Elephant Folio, there are only seventy-eight plates extant; this plate is listed on page 397 (plate 415) with the consignor of this lot listed as the owner of this plate.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
