Description

John James Audubon. Polar Hare, Plate 32, No. 27. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1844. Lithograph, hand-colored by J. T. Bowen and dated 1844, from the imperial folio edition of Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (Philadelphia: 1845-1848). Approximately 21.75 x 27.75 inches. Some soiling and damage to edges of the leaf, especially at the top and bottom margins, some toning to leaf near the margins, some light creasing or bumping to corners. Some foxing on verso. One tiny marginal tear. None of these flaws interfere with the illustration or text. Overall, a very good example.

More Information: Audubon's last work was The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, a study of mammals published in both an imperial folio format by J. T. Bowen as well as an octavo edition by Lockwood & Co. Not only was Audubon a superb wildlife painter, but he also contributed significantly to the study of bird and mammal anatomy and behavior.
