John James Audubon. Arctic Fox. Philadelphia: 1847. Hand-colored lithograph, number 25, plate 121.

    More Information:

John James Audubon. Arctic Fox, Plate 121, No. 25. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1847. Hand-colored lithograph featuring arctic fox in winter and summer pelage, from the imperial folio edition of Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (Philadelphia: 1845-1848). Approximately 27.375 x 21.25 inches. A shade toned; edgewear, with loss, approximately one-half inch at top left corner, two smaller chips and loss at lower corner, approximately two inches; touches of soil; stain, approximately one-quarter inch at top right corner; adhesive residue at verso. Very good. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.

Audubon's last work was The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, a study of mammals published in both an imperial folio format by J. T. Bowen as well as an octavo edition by Lockwood & Co. Not only was Audubon a superb wildlife painter, but he also contributed significantly to the study of bird and mammal anatomy and behavior.
