    Description

John [Jack] Kerouac. The Town and the City. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1950]. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author to Josephine Gordon, the sister of Al Hinkle: "To 'Jo' / from Albert's good / friend -- & yours. / Jack Kerouac." Octavo (8.0625 x 5.5 inches; 205 x 140 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 499, [5, blank] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in gilt. Page edges rough-trimmed. Covers with some mild edge wear, small areas of mild dark soiling to front board; surface scuff to bottom half of rear board. Page edges and margins faintly yellowed with age; staining and toning on recto of the preliminary blank from material once taped there, with offsetting onto neighboring leaves; toning to pages 422 and 423 from item previously laid in. Very good. Bookplate of "Jo" Gordon on the front pastedown. Gordon's brother, Al Hinkle, was the model for Jack Kerouac's Ed Dunkel character in On the Road (see previous lot). Includes a letter of provenance ("I am a ninety year old woman, who still has a vivid memory of the day in 1950 when I met Jack Kerouac.") and a copy of Last Man Standing... Al Hinkle. An interview [with Stephen D. Edington]. Big Ed Dunkel Press, 2011. First edition, limited to 200 copies.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
