John Hersey. Into the Valley. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. Proof copy. Inscribed to famed collector (and murder victim) Rolland Comstock by Hersey.

    More Information:

Inscribed by Hersey on the title-page: "For Rolland Comstock:/"What are you fighting for" - p. 63/[Hersey's printed name crossed out]/John Hersey". Octavo. [104] pages. Plain paper (original?) wrappers over cloth-backed thin boards. Spine chipped, wrappers creased and somewhat worn, first gutter cracked, text slightly shaken. Still, a good copy of an unusual item with an excellent association.

Rolland Lee Comstock (1936-2007) was a successful attorney in Springfield, MO., but he was nationally known as a prominent book collector, with a fine collection of over 50,000 books and related items. Tragically, he was shot to death on July 3, 2007. Although no one was ever formally charged with the crime, his ex-wife (they divorced in 2005) Alberta, was found liable for his death in a civil lawsuit filed by his adopted daughter (the verdict was later thrown out on a technicality). Alberta Comstock passed away on July 15, 2013

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
