    With Forty-One Engraved Maps

John Gibson. Atlas Minimus: or, a New Set of Pocket Maps, Of various Empires, Kingdoms and States, with Geographical Extracts relative to each. Philadelphia: Printed for Mathew Carey, April 14, 1798.

First American edition, though stated as a "New edition, Revised, Corrected, and Improved." Square twentyfourmo. 90 pages. With forty-one copper-engraved maps.

Contemporary crimson leather over paper boards with gilt spine titles. Significant wear and rubbing to the binding, with some leather at the corners worn away. Corners heavily worn. No front blank. Some minor dog-earing and tiny marginal tearing to text, with scattered minor foxing, staining and spotting throughout. A few corners with very small chips. Offsetting from maps to some facing pages. A one-inch vertical tear to the map of France, just barely affecting the engraving. Contemporary ink and later ownership inscriptions covering the rear endpapers. All in all, a very good copy of one of the earliest pocket atlases printed in the United States.

    Evans 33794. Phillips, Atlases 691.
