John Flamsteed. Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed, publie en 1776 par J. Fortin... Troisieme Edition. Paris: Lamarche, 1795. Second edition in French, and the third edition overall after the first edition in English (1729). Octavo. Thirty double-page engraved plates. Contemporary paper boards, rebacked with modern cloth, repairs along edges and at corners. Signature on covers and front flyleaf, manuscript notations in text and on rear endpapers. Altogether, still very good.

    More Information:

The first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, has his observations published posthumously in 1729 by his widow, assisted by Joseph Crosthwait and Abraham Sharp. The Atlas Coelestis was the first stellar atlas based in telescopic observations, and Flamsteed's motivation was in part to correct representations of the constellations as made by Bayer in Uranometria (1603). Changes in the positions of stars (original observations by Flamsteed had been made in the 1690s) led to an update made in the 1770s by Nicolas Fortin that was supervised by astronomers Le Monnier and Messier. The new version became known as the Atlas Fortin-Flamsteed and named the constellations in French rather than Latin, and the Atlas included some nebulae discovered after the death of Flamsteed. The 1795 version was further updated with new constellations and many more nebulae, and includes new discoveries made by Joseph Jerome Le Francais de Lalande. Brunet II:1280.
