The First Collected Edition of the Works of John Dryden, Edited by Sir Walter Scott

John Dryden. The Works of John Dryden, Now First Collected in Eighteen Volumes. Illustrated with Notes, Historical, Critical, and Explanatory, and a Life of the Author, by Walter Scott. London: William Miller, 1808. First collected edition, complete in eighteen octavo volumes. Complete with portrait frontispiece in volume I and all half-titles. Contemporary full tan calf, covers double-ruled in gilt. All volumes skillfully rebacked to style in matching calf, with spines stamped and ruled in gilt, with black and burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endleaves. Some darkening to fore-edges of boards (possible smoke damage), some minor rubbing to boards, hinges of volume I cracking (yet solid), a few other hinges starting. Still, a very good set. With the bookplates of music publisher Francis Broderip and a noble bookplate from Carlingford, possibly from the Fortescue family.
