    Description

John Dickson Carr. It Walks by Night. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1930. First edition of the author's first novel, and the first of his famous "locked room" mysteries. With the remnants of the tissue-paper "seal" in the gutter of pages 210-211 and the rear free endpaper (this is a Harper Sealed Mystery, with the final section of the text sealed in a tissue enclosure, daring the reader to be able to avoid tearing open the enclosure and reading the ending!). Octavo. [xii], 1-328, [4, blank] pages. Publisher's full blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in light blue. In the publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine a bit toned, rubbed, and creased. Cloth boards lightly rubbed and thumbsoiled. A few gutters lightly overopened. Jacket spine barely toned. Some minor rubbing, thumbsoiling to jacket. A bright, fine copy.

This novel introduces Carr's detective, Henri Bencolin, and thrusts him into a gruesome "locked room mystery," reminiscent of some of the best work by Poe.
