    Among his many achievements, MacDonald was elected as the president of the Mystery Writers of America in 1962 and was elected Grand Master in 1972; awarded Syracuse University's highest award, The George Arents Pioneer Medal for "contributions to American literature" in 1971; and received the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of American for "the entire body of his work in the mystery field" in 1972. The Executioners is the basis of the Cape Fear films (1962 and 1991).
