    First edition. Complete in thirty-nine octavo volumes. Navy-blue cloth with gilt stamping. All books include a bookplate affixed inside the front cover and Texas congressman "Tiger" Teague's red-ink stamp on the front endpaper. A few volumes have very minor dampstaining to top edges. Overall, volumes in very good to near fine condition, with only minor wear and toning.

    John Clement Fitzpatrick (1876-1940), who served as Assistant Chief of the Manuscripts Division at the Library of Congress, tackled the monumental task of editing this comprehensive thirty-nine volume edition of The Writings of George Washington. In total, Volumes 1-37 include 17,400 letters and documents either written by or on behalf of Washington. Letters written to Washington are mentioned in the notes only. Volumes 38 and 39 include the index.
