    Description

John Adams signed book inscribed to a Quincy family daughter

John Adams Signed Presentation Copy of A Discourse, Concerning Unlimited Submission and Non-Resistance to the Higher Powers; with some reflections on the resistance made to King Charles I. By Jonathan Mayhew; Boston: Re-printed by Hall & Goss. 1818. 48 pages, 8vo (5" x 8.5"). The inscription on the title (not in Adams' hand) reads, "Presented to Mary Sophia Quincy / Nov 15th by" - to which Adams adds his signature, "John Adams". Mary Sophia Quincy was the daughter of Josiah Quincy, a family relation from Abigail Adams' side of the family. His wife Abigail had died a month before this book was signed, and may explain why Adams has signed, but not written out the inscription. In his later years, Adams dictated many of his letters due to failing health.

Condition: Bound in three quarter leather, with the title in gilt along the spine. Top board is detached, and most of the gilt title has rubbed off. Leather has scuff marks and corners are bumped. Title and last page have foxing; remaining interior pages are gently and evenly toned.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
