"The Most Complete Description of the
Oregon Trail that we now Possess"

Joel Palmer. Journal of Travels over the Rocky Mountains, to the Mouth of the Columbia River; Made During the Years 1845 and 1846... Cincinnati: J.A. & U.P. James, 1847. First edition, second issue with corrected pages 31 and 121. Octavo. Small book label on front pastedown with symbol surrounded by the letters "M" and "C". Bound in full brown morocco, three raised spine bands with gilt symbol (same as on book label) and titles in compartments. Binding rubbed and scuffed, boards with stain marks. Bleedthrough and transfer around margins of endpapers from leather turn-ins. Pencil bookseller's notes on front endpapers. Pages foxed throughout. Very good.

    More Information:

"Palmer makes no pretence of literary finish. He gives us a simple narrative of each day's happenings during his own first journey in 1845, taking especial care to indicate the route, each night's camping places, and all possible cut-offs, springs, grassy oases, and whatever else might conduce to the well-being of the emigrant and his beasts. The great care taken by the author, with this very practical end in view, results in his volume being the most complete description of the Oregon Trail that we now possess." - Reuben Gold Thwaites.

[Early Western Travels Volume 30, pages 15-16, as quoted in Wanger-Camp, page 290].

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
