Engraved title-pages and large (virtually full-page) engravings of the author and fifty-seven portraits of the counts of Holland and Zealand by Christoffel Von Sichem, the younger. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt floral design in center of cover with gilt fillet borders, banded, gilt in compartments, title on label, edges speckled. Spines worn at ends, some wear to hinges and extremities; small piece torn off blank border of last leaf of volume II. Small ink notations on front pastedowns. Overall, a very good copy.     More Information:

    Le Petit (1546-1615) protestant chronicler, was born at Bethune. He fled, after his conversion from Catholicism, to Holland where he served William Ist, Prince of Orange. By 1598 he was living in Aix-la-Chapelle where he wrote his "Grande Chronicle" and dedicated it to the Estates-General of the United Provinces. This is his most important work, "En revanche la valeur historique du 2e vol., qui embrasse la periode de 1556-1600, est incontestable; il contient, ˆ cote d'extraits de plusieurs auteurs anterieurs, beaucoup de details et de particularites qu'on chercherait vainement ailleurs."
