    Description

James Otis: The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved (Boston, New-England Printed: London Reprinted for J. Williams and J. Almon, 1766), third edition, 120 pages, modern quarter morocco binding with gilt titles on a red leather spine plate and marbled paper boards, 8vo (5.25" x 8.25"). To a large extent, it was this very publication (in its first edition) that launched the political controversy that led to the American Revolution. The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved was originally written in response to the imposition of the Sugar Revenue Act of 1764, the first in a long line of British tax acts that the American colonists found particularly offensive. The book is in about very good condition, with moderate toning and mild damp-staining throughout the textblock, and a few scattered holographic notations in an unknown hand (Otis's himself?). A handsome example of a highly important early American imprint.
