    Association Copy of James Monroe's 1828 Memoir, with an Autograph Document Signed

    James Monroe. The Memoirs of James Monroe, Esq. Relating to His Unsettled Claims Upon the People and Government of the United States. Charlottesville, Virginia: Gilmer, Davis, 1828. First edition. Association copy, with inked notation on the title page, "Sent by Jas Monroe to B Vaughan" on the title page. The inscription is not believed to be in Monroe's hand. Vaughan was a close friend of Monroe's, and also friends with Brnjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. Small octavo. 60 pages. Contemporary self wrappers, stitched, as issued. Uncut. [with:] Autograph Document Signed, "Jas Monroe." One page, April 18, 1814, clipped from a larger piece of paper, 7.5 x 2.25 inches, mounted to a larger piece of paper. A pay request of $150 to a William Clarke. Two areas in the text with an x-shaped punch cancellation. Some fold separation. [and:] John Quincy Adams. Moneys Paid James Monroe, Late President. Message from the President of the United States... Washington: Gales & Seaton, 1826. Slim octavo. 20 pages. Original self wrappers, stiched, as issued. Uncut. This short pamphlet earlier disallowed payments to Monroe for debts incurred while Secretary of State and President, prompting Monroe to write his final appeal of 1828. All items housed together in a custom slipcase of brown leather over marbled paper-covered boards. A fascinating offering relating to the fifth president of the United States, in overall near fine condition. From a private collection in North Carolina.
