    Description

    James Maury. [1803 Document Signed as Consul of the United States of America, For the Port of Liverpool]. "James Maury." 8.75 x 7.25 inches, partially printed on the recto only, the remainder completed in manuscript. Dated March 16, 1803. The document certifies that "Prince Drake / Twenty Eight years of age, Five feet six / inches high - Mulatto, Marked with the / Small Pox, his right little Finger stiff, is / a citizen of the United States of America." The document is countersigned beneath the affixed Seal of the United States by Thomas Bigland. The document is toned with scattered soiling, short splits and small holes at the intersection of the folds. Good.

    James Maury (1746-1840) was one of the first U.S. diplomats and the first American consul appointed overseas, serving in the Consulate of the United States in Liverpool. He held the position of Consul for 39 years until he was removed from office by Andrew Jackson in 1829.
