Octavo (7.375 x 5.875 inches; 188 x 125 mm.). [8], 187, [1], [1, blank], [1, note on the type], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's orange cloth, front board lettered and decoratively stamped in blue, spine and rear board stamped in blue outlining text and publisher's device; top edge of the text block stained blue, others trimmed; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Barely perceptible dust soiling at extremities of binding. One or two tiny spots of soiling at interior of text block. Dust jacket faintly toned at spine and rear panel; a tiny amount of wear to spine and flap fold ends. The Florence and Edward Kaye copy with their red leather label affixed to front pastedown. A beautiful, nearly fine copy. Housed in custom black cloth chemise in black cloth slipcase with green morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. One of the most important twentieth-century crime novels and the basis for a number of adaptations, including an opera, radio drama, plays, and several films, the most famous of these being the 1946 film noir starring Lana Turner and John Garfield. Samuel Marx was an author, screenwriter, and producer who worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the production company being the 1946 adaptation (though Marx is not credited on the project).
