    James M. Cain. The Modern Cinderella. [Maryland?]: September, 1938. Original typescript, with a typed letter, signed, from Cain affixed to the front inner-wrapper. 171 letter-sized leaves (11 x 8.5 inches; 280 x 212 mm.). [1, title], 169, [1, blank] leaves. Text on rectos only. Loose leaves bound with brass fasteners in a blue paperboard portfolio; exterior covered in patterned paper; title and author typewritten on front. Edge wear and rubbing to covers, with a few short tears extending in from fore-edges, mostly visible only at versos; small chip out of patterned paper at front fore-edge; mild joint wear with splits starting at top and bottom of both. Very light toning to edges and interior of text block. Some slight rumpling to extreme edges of letter. Near fine manuscript and letter in a very good binding. In the letter, Cain describes the development of the story and its publication and film adaptation history, dated February 8, 1971. It would go on to be published by Avon in 1951 under the title, The Root of His Evil. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
