James K. Lee. The Volunteer's Hand Book: Containing an Abridgment of Hardee's Infantry Tactics, Adapted to the Use...

James Kendall Lee (1829-1861) was a Virginia lawyer who was appointed as lieutenant of the First Regiment of Virginia infantry. He died at the battle of Bull Run on July 18, 1861. Although we don't have an exact date of publication of this book, it is likely that the true first was published around May of that year, before North Carolina seceded from the Union. There were seven editions of this work issued in 1861, this true first and then six others which were published in Richmond, with their later issues indicated on the title-page. It is interesting that this book was published at the Institute for the Deaf & Dumb & the Blind; it was not uncommon for books to be published at such institutions, as printing was considered to be one of the few occupations that people with these challenges could undertake.
