A Civil War Rarity; the True First Edition of James K. Lee's Volunteer's Hand Book, Published in North Carolina Before it Seceded
James K. Lee. The Volunteer's Hand Book:
Containing an Abridgment of Hardee's Infantry Tactics, Adapted
to the Use of the Percussion Musket in Squad and Company Exercises,
Manual of Arms for Riflemen and United States Army Regulations as
to Parades, Reviews, Inspections, Guard Mounting, &c.
Raleigh: Printed at the Inst. for the Deaf & Dumb & the
Blind, 1861. First edition. Approximately 6 x 4 inches. Small
octavo. 96, [ii] pages. Original publisher's plain, paper-backed
limp cloth wraps. Some wear, soiling, one short tear (at rear panel
near spine tailcap) to wrappers, page [1], a blank, missing
approximately one-half inch at upper margin, rear free endpaper
missing, text pages dampstained and foxed, last several pages have
a short tear at the upper margin (not affecting text). Despite
these flaws, this is a near fine copy of this rare and fragile item
(only one other copy of this true first edition has been at auction
in the last fifty years).
More Information:
James Kendall Lee (1829-1861) was a Virginia lawyer who was appointed as lieutenant of the First Regiment of Virginia infantry. He died at the battle of Bull Run on July 18, 1861. Although we don't have an exact date of publication of this book, it is likely that the true first was published around May of that year, before North Carolina seceded from the Union. There were seven editions of this work issued in 1861, this true first and then six others which were published in Richmond, with their later issues indicated on the title-page. It is interesting that this book was published at the Institute for the Deaf & Dumb & the Blind; it was not uncommon for books to be published at such institutions, as printing was considered to be one of the few occupations that people with these challenges could undertake.
Broadfoot p. 530. Crandall, Volume II, 2443.
