    Description

    James Joyce. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1924. First edition, fourth printing. Inscribed by Joyce on the front blank: "To A. K. Griggs / James Joyce / Paris 16. Vi. 934." Octavo (7.75 x 6 inches; 198 x 154 mm). [2, blank], [iv], [1]-736 pages. With original wrappers bound-in at front and rear. Full maroon cloth, black morocco spine label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, matching morocco-tipped slipcase of a later date. Some rubbing to binding, front joint cracked, front hinge starting, browning and chipping to text, mainly at the first few leaves. Title page is detached and laid in loosely, and is chipped around the edges. Text is generally fragile as is common for this edition of this title - "The fourth and fifth [printings] were printed on thick paper of inferior quality" (Slocum and Cahoon, A17). Marginal stain to page 33, barely affecting text. Neat repair to gutter at front blank, just touching the "P" of "Paris" in Joyce's inscription. Still, a very good example of a notoriously fragile item, seldom seen inscribed.

    The recipient of the inscription, Arthur Kingsland Griggs edited and translated several works, including Daudet's Memoirs, and wrote a popular guidebook, Paris for Everyman.
