Description
James Joyce. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. First edition, limited to 1,000 numbered copies, of which this is one of 750 copies on handmade paper, numbered 444. Large octavo (9.375 x 7.375 inches; 239 x 187 mm.). [12, blanks and preliminaries], 732, [1, printer's statement], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's perfect binding, original blue wrappers, front lettered in white; all text block edges untrimmed. Backstrip creased, with some light rubbing resulting in mild loss to surface of paper over bands; small amount of nicking at corners of backstrips; mild wear along joints; just a trace of rippling to wrappers from age and binding process; a bit of very faint rubbing and discoloration to wrappers; dark speck and tiny amount of wear and curling at edges. Minimal amount of very faint dulling along text block edges; a few smudges of pale thumbsoiling to front free endpaper and first couple of leaves of text block; small spot of soiling at foot of limitation page; tiny gouge out of fore-edge margin of pages 57-58; back half of text block unopened. Near fine, given the fragile nature of the volume. Clean, bright interior. With the original prospectus for the book, a single bifolium with a tipped-in reproduced photo of Joyce, laid in at front. Housed in custom one-quarter dark blue morocco book-backed clamshell.A classic of English-language literature, and defendant in the storied obscenity trial United States v. One Book Called Ulysses, a landmark case in the history of American publishing. Cyril Connolly writes, it "achieve[s] greatness like a ruined temple soaring from a jungle -- and should be judged perhaps as a poem, a festival of the imagination. It is also our novel, adopted at last even by Ireland and begetter of several generations of theses in America." Beach, Shakespeare and Company (Lincoln: U of Nebraska Press, 1991), pp. 85-86 ("Here at last was Ulysses, in a Greek blue jacket, bearing the title and the author's name in white letters. Here were the seven hundred and thirty-two pages 'complete as written,' and an average of one to a half-a-dozen typographical errors per page"); Connolly 42; Slocum and Cahoon 17.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.View More Testimonials
As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
HA.com receives more traffic than any other auction house website. (Source: Similarweb.com)
