    Description

James Joyce. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. First edition, handmade paper issue, limited to 750 copies, from a total limitation of 1000, of which this is number 569. Large octavo (9.375 x 7.375 inches; 238 x 187 mm.). [v-xii], 732, [1, printer's note], [3, blank] (note: lacking two preliminary and two terminal blank leaves). Recent light greenish-blue quarter-paper (disbound from a later cloth binding and respined), and incorporating the original wrappers but lacking the flaps; fore and bottom edges rough-trimmed. Wrappers lightly soiled with some occasional faint staining; rear wrapper with a small (approximately one-inch long) paper repair near the joint and diagonal crease at lower corner; edges lightly worn with a few nicks, one closed tear repaired. Top edge of text block lightly dust-soiled; occasional marginal soiling or soft creasing with a faint stain to fore-edge of first two leaves (half-title and title-page). A nice, incomplete copy, housed in a custom clamshell case (faint odor in clamshell, noticeable, but not as prevalent in the book). Slocum and Cahoon A17; Connolly 42. This copy purportedly belonged to Nancy Cunard, sold by Sotheby's on 12 December 1961 (lot 105, bound in limp cloth). A fragment of a photograph of Joyce with Irish singer John O'Sullivan, that was captioned by Cunard and mentioned in the Sotheby's catalog description, is laid in. It is possibly a flyleaf from one of the book's previous bindings, including potentially the pigskin binding that was destroyed when this copy was stored at Le puits carré (The Four-Cornered Well, Cunard's Normandy farmhouse near Réanville (now the commune of La Chapelle-Longueville)) during the Nazi occupation of France (Cunard's caption). Sadly, no indication of provenance remains inside the book.
