    Description

James Joyce. Ulysses. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies, of which this is number 868, one of the 750 copies printed on handmade paper in its distinctive blue wrappers. Printed for Sylvia Beach by Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France. Quarto (9.5 x 7.5 inches; 241 x 191 mm). [1-2], 3-732 pages, partially unopened. The book is in the original blue wrappers, housed in a blue cloth custom-made box. Original wrappers are in good condition, except for minor chipping at edges and slight separation at edges of joints. Internally very good to near fine. The custom-made box is worn, frayed, with slight separation at top right of joint; also, some dampstaining on back cover of box. Condition of box, however, in no way detracts from the near fine condition of the volume.

"Universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times..." (Grolier, Joyce 69). Joyce had trouble finding a publisher for this work, until he contacted Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year, Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world of 1922... Then began the great game of smuggling the edition into countries where it was forbidden, especially England and the United States... (de Grazia, 27).

A remarkable copy of Joyce's masterpiece.
