The first illustrated edition of Ulysses, number 596 of 1,500 numbered copies signed by the artist, Henri Matisse. Quarto. [xvi], , 363, [1, blank], [2, limitation leaf], [4, blank] pages. Twenty-six plates, consisting of six soft-ground etchings, printed by hand, and twenty lithographic drawings, made as studies for the etchings, printed on thin colored papers. Original brown buckram embossed in gold on front cover and spine from a design by LeRoy H. Appleton. Top edge sprinkled brown, others uncut. Housed in the publisher's printed cardboard slipcase with light soiling, wear around the edges, and a partial split along the bottom. Very minor shelf wear to boards. A couple of small white stains to spine, and one to front cover. Small areas of thumbsoiling to a few leaves. A near fine copy.
