S. limited issue, limited to 425 total copies (including the English issue), of which this is number 170, and signed by the author. Large octavo (10 x 6.25 inches; 255 x 160 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 628 pages. Publisher's smooth red buckram, spine ruled and lettered in gilt; top edge gilt, others untrimmed; in original yellow cloth slipcase. Spine ends just barely pushed; edges with just a touch of wear at extremities of joints and corners; bottom corners barely tapped. Faint offsetting to front pastedown; bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Slipcase with some very mild soiling and a hint of wear. A very nearly fine copy in a near fine slipcase. Slocum and Cahoon A49; Connolly 87. Published May 4, 1939 with identical issues for London (125 copies) and New York (300 copies, or 310 according to Slocum). This copy landed at, and was sold by, Gotham Book Mart, whose bookseller ticket is affixed to the rear pastedown. Gotham Book Mart famously championed James Joyce and his works, and it was the regular meeting place for both The James Joyce Society of New York and The Finnegans Wake Society of New York.
