With Bookseller's Label from Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company

James Joyce. Finnegans Wake. London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1939.

First trade edition. With a bookseller's label reading "Shakespeare and Company / Sylvia Beach / 12, rue de l'Odeon / Paris-vi" affixed to the bottom of the rear pastedown. Large octavo. 628 pages.

Publisher's red cloth, with spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Bottom edge uncut. In the original dust jacket. Minor wear to binding. Toning or offsetting to gutters of beginning and end leaves. Light rubbing, a minor closed tear, and some chipping to dust jacket edges, with minor loss in a few areas. Short closed tear to the top corner of the front flap. Overall, a very good copy.

Finnegans Wake, Joyce's final landmark novel that took seventeen years to write, is generally considered to be the most complex and challenging book ever written in the English language. "[P]erhaps the definitive and most extreme work of literary Modernism" (The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English).
