DescriptionJames B. Gillett. Six Years with the Texas Rangers 1875 to 1881 - A Signed Presentation Copy. Austin: Von Boeckmann-Jones Co., 1921. First edition. Signed presentation copy. 8vo. 332 pp. Frontispiece. Illustrations. Green cloth over boards. Gilt lettering to front board and spine. Binding slightly cocked. Some wear to extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. Very good.
In Burs Under the Saddle, Ramon Adams spends nine paragraphs pointing out historical inaccuracies in this book that Gillett wrote decades after the events, mainly having to do with Sam Bass. However, J. Frank Dobie, in his Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest, praises the book and Gillett: "I regard Gillett as the strongest and straightest of all ranger narrators. He combined in his nature wild restlessness and loyal gentleness." Gillett paid for the publication of this scarce first edition and distributed it himself.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
