Toning and scattered foxing to leaves. Volume I with staining to upper margin of textblock and some final leaves with a little bio-predation to upper corners. Very good. The books with the Lawrence Augustine Washington / Dr. Lawrence A. Washington / Dr. John H. Bowers provenance were once owned by members of the Washington Family in Virginia, with many purchased or belonging originally to Lawrence Augustine Washington (1774-1824), a nephew of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Lawrence was the son of Col. Samuel Washington, a younger brother to the first president who preceded George in death by eighteen years. George Washington was executor and guardian in his brother's will, so Lawrence Augustine was reared at Mount Vernon and for a short time was his famous uncle's secretary. Lawrence Washington's son, Dr. Lawrence Augustine Washington (1812-1882), a grandnephew of George Washington, set out for Texas sometime between 1845 and 1851, and lived in Colorado County. In Texas, Dr. Washington became close friends with Dr. John H. Bowers (1817-1907) who himself arrived in Texas in 1836 and was on his way to join the Texas army when the Battle of San Jacinto occurred. In ministering to the wounded he attended and befriended Mexican General Santa Anna; and also treated and became friendly with Sam Houston and other early prominent figures in the Texas Republic. When Dr. Washington prepared to move to Arkansas in 1867, he gave his considerable library to his friend Dr. Bowers. These books were passed down in the Bowers family until they finally became divided between the heirs. Half of the books turned up some years ago in a barn in Smithville, Texas, and were donated to the University of Texas. The books being offered here are from the other line of descendants in the Bowers family.
Many of the books are signed: "Law. A. Washington" and dated. Some note the place, date or manner of acquisition. Some books have annotations and notes in Washington's hand. Several books in the collection bear the inscription of Dr. Bowers' daughter: "Mrs. Jennie Adkins / from her father / Dr. John H. Bowers / [date, often 1904]".

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
HA.com receives more traffic than any other auction house website. (Source: Similarweb.com)
