London: George Allen & Unwin, 1955. First edition, first impression, first state (without the signature "4" or the sagging text), originally designated as second state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11], Octavo. 416 pages, map attached to rear endpaper. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in gilt; top edge stained red; in the original second state dust jacket (with blurbs on the rear jacket flap). Spine very gently rolled; spine ends softly bumped, with a small ding to the top edge of the front boar of Two Towers; boards light rubbed with a touch of soiling and a light circular tidemark on the front board of Fellowship; spines slightly askew. Page edges and margins very lightly soiled; endpapers of Fellowship with some offsetting; previous ownership signature in each volume. Dust jacket spine panels faintly tanned; edges lightly worn, particularly at the edges of the panel folds, crown of Two Towers with a creased tear (mended with tape on the verso); few tape repairs on the verso of Fellowship; occasional rubbing and spot soiling. A very good set that presents quite nicely. Housed together in custom quarter blue morocco clamshell case (mild rubbing, spine a bit sunned). Hammond and Anderson A5 i, ii, iii.Auction Info
