    Mixed Early Editions of The Lord of the Rings

    J. R. R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings [The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King]. London: George Allen and Unwin, Ltd, 1955. Mixed early editions (Fellowship of the Ring is a fourth impression book and jacket, Two Towers is a second impression book and jacket, and Return of the King is a first edition, first impression (signature "4" and "sagging text" on page 49) in a first impression dust jacket (with no reviews present under the first two titles on the rear flap). Three octavo volumes. Publisher's full red cloth, spines stamped in gilt, price-clipped dust jackets. Jacket spines sunned and soiled, some rubbing and a few tears to jackets, some rubbing to bindings, some foxing to endleaves. Still, a very good set now housed in a handsome, custom-built cloth slipcase with pictorial scenes inlaid.
