First American edition, first impression with an illustration of a bowing Hobbit on the title page, the list of illustrations on page 9 erroneously listing "Thor's Map" first, Chapter VII mislabeled as "Chapter VI" on page [118], and with final leaf blank and without half-title as issued. Octavo. 310, [2, blank] pages. Thirteen text illustrations after Tolkien, four in color; endpapers illustrated with maps of the Wilderland and Thror's Map in red. Publisher's pictorial tan cloth stamped in blue and red; original illustrated dust jacket. Cocked, corners rubbed, head and foot of spine pushed and somewhat worn. Illustrated map endpapers; some offsetting and dampstaining, front and rear pastedowns with large abrasions affecting map text. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; minor intermittent soiling, text block edges toned with minor wear. Dust jacket unclipped ($2.50); heavy edgewear with some losses, somewhat creased, spine sunned, somewhat rubbed, minor foxing and dampstaining to verso. Very good book with good dust jacket.
