J[ohn]. White. Hocus Pocus: Or, A Rich Cabinet of Legerdemain Curiosities, Natural and Artificial Conclusions. [London]: Sold at the Ring in Little-Britain [by George Conyers, circa 1712]. Early edition, possibly condensed, of the one of the earliest books on magic; covering much of the same ground (fireworks, how to cleave a groat) and using several of the same woodcuts as the much longer 1689 sixth edition of White's A Rich Cabinet (originally published in 1651). Twelvemo in sixes (5.75 x 3.5 inches; 146 x 90 mm.). A-F6; 72 pages; full-page frontispiece on A1 verso, numerous in-text woodcut illustrations throughout. Contemporary sprinkled calf, boards ruled in blind. Rear free endpaper only. Boards splayed and somewhat worn; joints a little stressed; foot of spine worn with backstrip partially detached, exposing the bottom of the text block; boards exposed at corners. Frontispiece slightly shaved along the fore-edge and with a two-inch closed tear to the inner margin; small hole to the upper margin of A3, removing two letters from the verso; a bit of biopredation to the lower margin of the last four leaves and the rear free endpaper, not affecting any text; pages a little soiled; bottom corner of gatherings D and E browned. Very good. Rare. ESTC T122333.
