    The Exceedingly Rare First Printing of Rowling's First Harry Potter Book, with a Signed Photo and Transmittal Autograph Note Signed on Her Own Stationery

    J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. [London]: Bloomsbury, [1997]. First edition, first printing, one of 500 copies of the first and rarest of the Harry Potter books, and likely one of approximately 300 copies sent to British libraries. Correct full number line ("10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"), "Copyright © Text Joanne Rowling 1997" (rather than "J. K. Rowling"), and "Taylor1997" (rather than "Taylor 1997") on the copyright page, and with "1 wand" appearing twice (first and last) in the list of "Other Equipment" on page 53. Octavo. 223, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's pictorial laminated boards illustrated by Thomas Taylor. Noticeable shelf wear to the binding. Boards rubbed. Spine a bit tender, with several spots of abrasion along the joints. One area along the top of the front joint likely repaired, with the laminate lacking in an area measuring about two and one-half inches and in a small fingernail-size area on the spine. Spine ends bumped and a bit tattered. Corners rubbed and bumped; three exposed. Glue remnants on the front free endpaper, probably from a removed library bookplate. No other library markings present. Text mildly toned around the edges. Substantially over-opened at the title page. A well-thumbed, likely ex-library copy of the rarest Harry Potter book in about very good condition.

    Accompanying the book are two unique pieces of Rowlingiana. The first is a black-and-white Photograph Signed "J K Rowling" measuring four and one-half inches by six and three-quarters inches. The second item is an Autograph Note Signed "J K Rowling / (Jo)" on her personal cardstock stationery, reading "23/1/04 / Dear Adam, / Firstly, I am very [underlined] sorry about / the huge delay in responding to / your letter. I had a baby last / year and took some time off, / hence the vast backlog of mail. / However, here is a signed picture / for you to auction. You have / all my admiration for the great / work you are doing. / With love from / J. K. Rowling / (Jo)." Rowling's note, essentially a transmittal letter for the signed photo here, is written on each side of the card, which measures five and three-quarter inches by four and one-quarter inches, and comes with the original mailing envelope. There is a light horizontal crease to the photo at Rowling's eye level, else both items are in fine condition.
