First edition, first printing, the rarer hardcover issue of the first and rarest of the Harry Potter books, with the correct full number line ("10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"), "Copyright © Text Joanne Rowling 1997" (rather than "J. K. Rowling"), and "Taylor1997" (rather than "Taylor 1997") on the copyright page, and with "1 wand" appearing twice (first and last) in the list of "Other Equipment" on page 53. Octavo. 223, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's pictorial boards. Ex-library copy (most of the hardcovers were sent to libraries in England - this copy with two ink stamps stating "Rochdale Libraries"). Binding covered in laminate. Laminate and binding worn, front free endpaper missing, ink-stamps on half-title and title-page, as well as a small ink note on half-title, a small chip in the lower margin of page 53/54, a four and a half inch horizontal tear across the text of page 73/74 (neatly repaired with tape), a marginal chip barely touching text on page 105/106, page 151/152 a bit loose, and page 157-156 a bit bumped at top. Occasional light stains. Text toned. Skewed. Overall, a fair copy of this rare book.
    The publisher, Bloomsbury, had published an initial run of about 500 copies of this book in hardcover, approximately 300 of which were sent to libraries (such as this one apparently was). This book went on to win most of the British literary awards for children's fiction for that year, which launched the international Harry Potter phenomenon.
