    J. - K. Huysmans. L'ART MODERNE. Paris: G. Charpentier, 1883. First edition. Inscribed by Huysmans to the Danish-French artist and illustrator Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) on the half title page.
    Duodecimo (4.75" x 7.25"), [1-3], 4-277, [278-280] pages. Paper wrappers (covered with glassine protective wrapper) in slipcase of half leather, with slipcase box. Printed by G. Chamerot in Paris. Several pages are loose; some paper loss on spine; front paper wrapper separating at bottom; otherwise good.

    Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907) was a French novelist and art critic. He supported himself by a 30-year career in the French civil service. This collection of Huysmans' art criticism reveals his defense of the Impressionist movement during a time it was being ridiculed or ignored by the French art establishment. According to Huysmans, Degas was the best painter in France. In this work, he analyses of the works of Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Gauguin, Mary Cassatt, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau.
