    Description

    J. D. Salinger. The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First edition, tenth printing (September 1951), presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Dec. 24, 1951 / To Susan Bishop- / with best wishes, / J. D. Salinger." Octavo (7.75 x 5.25 inches; 198 x 133 mm.). [2, blank], [vi], 277, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered and tooled in gilt; in the original dust jacket, later state with the price registered further right and the background visible above Salinger on the rear panel. Backstrip is a bit toned; some edgewear to spine; minor rubbing, thumbsoiling to binding; some offsetting to endleaves; a few leaves near the end creased at upper corner. Dust jacket soiled at verso (most of this soiling is hardly visible on the front of the jacket); jacket spine barely toned (brighter than usually seen); light toning to jacket panels; some edgewear, mild chipping and a few tears to jacket edges and corners; some wear to joints; upper jacket panels and spine neatly creased with a horizontal line. Very good. Chemised in quarter black morocco slipcase. One of the more difficult modern literary highspots to find signed. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
