    Description

J[acob]. De Cordova. Texas: Her Resources and her Public Men. A Companion for J. De Cordova's New and Correct Map of the State of Texas. Philadelphia: E. Crozet, Cor. Thirteenth & Market, 1858. First edition, first issue. 8vo. 371 pp [1, calendar]. Advertisements begin at bottom of page 251 and continue through page 364; index is printed on pages 365-371. Page 351 is incorrectly numbered 251, and the page number type of page 67 is damaged. Original dark brown cloth over boards, blind embossed. Gilt lettering to spine dulled. We have previously handled the second issue of this title, but this is the first time we have encountered the first issue.

"De Cordova, a native of Jamaica, was one of the earliest Jewish settlers in Texas. He supplied goods for the Texas Revolution from New Orleans and settled in Galveston in 1837. [...] He was fluent in English, German, French, Spanish, Hebrew, and several Indian languages. He became one of the leading land merchants in Texas, and worked for thirty years promoting immigration into the state" (Basic Texas Books). Most of the concerns of potential immigrants to Texas are addressed: climate, soil quality, transportation, laws, history, biography of Texas luminaries, churches, fraternal organizations, schools, and a short but comprehensive introduction to the legal issues of land claims and deeds; resulting in what Raines describes as "a fine cyclopedia at the time."

Condition: Moderate toning throughout. Foxing and light dampstaining to endpapers only. Shelf wear, with chipping to top and bottom pf spine. A tight, clean copy in very good condition.
