Signed and inscribed to the half-title page in author's distinctive miniscule hand, "This is the story of a celebrated / case. It tells of the conviction / for murder of one Howard Burt / against the testimony of three / eye witnesses. The chain of circum- / stance being so irrefragable. / Irving Bacheller."

    Octavo. 315 pp. Publisher's gilt-stamped red cloth. Corners bumped and rubbed, minor edgewear, gilt darkened. Front hinge starting, bookplate to front pastedown, bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown, very minor soiling to rear endpapers. Internally clean; minor edgewear. Housed in custom brown cloth slipcase backed in brown leather with red leather spine label, 5 raised bands, and decorated in gilt, with matching brown cloth two-fold wrapper with brown ribbon pull; slipcase with minor edgewear, somewhat rubbed. Very good.

    Irving Bacheller is perhaps most well-known for his work in founding the first modern newspaper syndicate in the United States, The Bacheller Syndicate and was responsible for the introduction of many British writers such as Doyle, Kipling, and Conrad to the American audience; his syndicate was the first to serialize Stephen Crane's, The Red Badge of Courage.
