First Edition of The Joy of Cooking in the Exceedingly Rare Dust Jacket

Irma S. Rombauer. The Joy of Cooking. A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with a Casual Culinary Chat. St. Louis: Printed by A.C. Clayton Printing Co., 1931. First edition. Octavo (7.75 x 5.25 inches; 197 x 133 mm). [32], 395, [1, blank] pages. With silhouettes by Marion Rombauer at the beginning of each chapter. Publisher's original pebbled blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on front board, a single line printed on the lower rear pastedown. In the original blue, green, black, and white pictorial dust-jacket encapsulated in mylar. Previous owner's signature on front free endpaper. Lower inner corner of rear board and lower outer corner of front board bumped and slightly abraded. Jacket soiled; closed 1.5-inch tear to front panel, a few bits of loss at head and foot of spine panel, top of rear panel, and along the fold between the rear panel and rear flap. Overall a very good copy.

    More Information:

First self-published by the author in 1931, The Joy of Cooking quickly became of of the most popular cookbooks of all time, and remains one of the most important, authoritative American cookbooks of the twentieth century. Because it was so popular (and generally well-used), it is difficult to find The Joy of Cooking in good condition, despite the printed reminder on the rear pastedown: "The cover of this book may be cleaned with a moist cloth." The present copy not only is one of the rare examples in extraordinarily good condition, but is also in the exceedingly rare, nearly impossible-to-find pictorial jacket featuring Saint Martha of Bethany battling the Tarasque monster.
