    The Trinity:
    an Illuminated Medieval Miniature

    [Illuminated Manuscript] [Medieval Miniature on Vellum from a Book of Hours:] The Trinity: God the Father, the Dove of the Holy Spirit, and Crucified Christ. France: circa 1450. Double sided single leaf. Approximately 5.5 x 7.5 inches. Recto: The miniature (approximately 3.25 x 3.75 inches) has a vaulted top and is bordered in gold. God the Father has a dark beard and a solid gold nimbus. He sits on a throne. His robe is blue with a gold collar and he wears a red vermilion crown. In His outstretched hands He holds the ends of the cross. Christ is shown crucified with a gold halo and a gold orb is at the base. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers just above the cross. The floor is green, the room is red with gold circles, the sky in blues with gold accents. A second half border surround the four lines to text in gold, blue and vermilion leading to a large initial "D" in gold on a blue ground with vermilion inside all heightened with white tracery. The leaf has a full border of vines and plants in gold, blue, green, red and black. Verso: Fifteen lines of text in Gothic book hand in dark brown ink with eight decorated initials in blue, and gold with blue and red decorations. There are three decorative line fillers with gold. It is ruled in red. Light edge wear, five small notches in inner edge from previous binding, some light marginal soiling, patches of wear in the sky and on God's robe, small holograph pencil book dealer's marks on both sides, lower corners; otherwise in very good condition.
