Description

    The Rare Uncorrected Proof of
The Spy Who Loved Me, with the
    Scarce Proof Dust Jacket

Ian Fleming with Vivienne Michel. The Spy Who Loved Me. London: Jonathan Cape, [1962]. Uncorrected Proof, one of only 500 copies printed. In the rare original proof dust jacket (with the absence of the Wilkinson Swords credit and the misspelling of Adirondacks ("Adirondacs") on the front flap.) This jacket is rare due to the fact that the designer Richard Chopping couldn't settle on a final design quickly enough for more proof jackets to be printed. Laid-in is an unusual printed promotional letter (ostensibly written by "Vivienne Michel") about the book and in which she briefly touches on the delay in the completed dust jacket artwork. Octavo. 221, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's printed wrappers, dust jacket. Jacket is a bit taller than the book, so there is creasing and mild wear to upper edge, some rubbing to edges of jacket, joints of jacket are a bit more creased than one may expect, but this is partially due to the heavier paper stock used. Light rubbing to binding, the first leaf is chipped at bottom (it was still partially uncut and attached to the title-page where the remnant is still present), a few pages mildly creased near upper edge, bookseller's ink stamp on page [5]. Very slightly skewed. Still, a bright, fine copy. From the James Bond collection of Gary Firuta.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
