The Rare First Edition of Ian Fleming's The Man with the Golden Gun, with the Gilt-Stamped Gun

Ian Fleming. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, [1965]. First edition, first impression, first issue, first state. (as per Gilbert). One of 940 copies printed with this gilt-stamped gun on the front board. Octavo. Publisher's full black paper over boards, front board and spine stamped in gilt, green and white endleaves, dust jacket. Jacket spine slightly sunned, some rubbing to jacket, minor rubbing to spine of binding. The gilt-stamped gun is remarkably bright, with only a few very tiny oxidation spots. Slightly skewed. A fine copy of a James Bond rarity.
According to Gilbert, it was Cape's intention to print the entire run of this title with the gilt-stamped gun on the front board, but after nearly 1,000 copies were done, it became apparent that this would be too costly, so the gilt-stamping was abandoned. Contrary to previous thought, these copies were sold just like any other copy (it had been thought that the majority of this run had been pulped). These gilt-stamped copies, being the first printed, were sent to the Commonwealth countries because of the time factor (it took several weeks by boat to get these books to their destinations overseas, and in order to release the book as close as possible to its release date, these copies, the earliest available, left first). Technically, this binding is the publisher's trial binding - rejected in favor of a cheaper alternative.
    Gilbert, A13a (1.1).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
