First Edition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
    Ian Fleming's Only Children's Book

Ian Fleming [ James Bond ]. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Illustrated by John Burningham. [London: Jonathan Cape, 1964-1965]. First editions, first impressions. Three octavo volumes. Publisher's pictorial paper boards, dust jackets. Jacket slightly rubbed, bumped and toned, some rubbing and bumping to bindings. Still, a fine set, better than usually seen.
Ian Fleming wrote this charming story for his son Caspar, while he (Ian) was recovering in hospital from a heart attack. Jon Gilbert relates a humorous story about the writing of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: in June of 1961, Fleming took his son Caspar to see the Walt Disney film, The Absent-Minded Professor. To his horror, the film featured a flying car built by an eccentric inventor and had a scene of this car circling a church spire. Fleming had to do some quick re-writing to change his story, and remove a sequence of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang flying around Canterbury Cathedral. He kept in the famous fudge recipe, though, found at the end of the third volume.
    Gilbert A17a1, 4, 6.
From the James Bond collection of Gary Firuta.
