Ian Fleming. Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, [1953]. First edition, first impression, first issue dust jacket. Octavo. 218 pages. Publisher's black Fabroleen cloth (Type A) stamped in matte orange-red; original illustrated first issue dust jacket. Foot of spine just pushed. White endpapers; damage to front pastedown from something mounted and then removed, minor foxing. Internally clean and tight, top and fore-edge trimmed, tail edge rough-trimmed; text block edges lightly toned with minor wear. Dust jacket featuring the publisher's decorative clip (10s 6d); very minor edgewear, spine a touch sunned, minor foxing to rear panel, ever so slightly toned. Housed in custom gray morocco clamshell case by the Heritage Bindery, decoratively stamped in gilt and red to match the dust jacket. Near fine book with near fine dust jacket; truly the finest example of the first issue jacket, rare in any condition, that we have seen.

A bright and exceedingly beautiful copy of the story that began the Bond legacy, described by Fleming himself to his close friend, Robert Harling, as the "spy novel to end all spy novels." And just as with its mysterious protagonist, Casino Royale maintains a somewhat complicated and tempestuous history with Hollywood. The film was first adapted for the silver screen in 1955, but only as a somewhat chaotic satire featuring five credited directors, one uncredited, and an all-star cast. The rights moved from hand to hand for some time following, including being traded for partial rights to Spider-Man, until Eon Productions eventually adapted it again in 2006. The 2006 film was directed by Martin Campbell and starred Daniel Craig in his first appearance as 007. The film was a major commercial success, breaking many records for the Bond franchise, but was met with somewhat mixed critical reviews.

    Gilbert A1a (1.1), dust jacket A.
