William Hope Hodgson. The House on the Borderland. London: Chapman & Hall, 1908. First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper recto, "Frances G. Knowles-Foster / from / William Hope Hodgson - / Dec: 29th -|10. / "This one moment in / Eternity. Where next, / Sir Time?" Octavo. 300, [4, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's dark red cloth, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Corners just rubbed, head and foot of spine just pushed, slightly cocked. Cream endpapers, small pencil notation to front pastedown, some offsetting. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; minor intermittent thumbsoiling, text block edges with minor wear and soiling. Very good.

Frances G. Knowles-Foster was known as the "yachting authoress," a prolific author and adventurer who often took her small yacht, The Enchantress, up the Thames and through many of the waters surrounding England. Bleiler recognizes this title as "one of the classics of supernatural fiction," blending elements of Wells' The Time Machine and Hodgson's own works into a tale of horror and psychology that has captured the fascination of many, even H. P. Lovecraft himself, who praised the title in his essay, Supernatural Horror in Literature, as "the true note of cosmic horror."

Barron, Horror, 3-92 (First Purchase Title); Bleiler, Supernatural, 815; Currey, page 243. From the Gary Munson Collection
